Dwell Development Honored with Two National Design Awards

Seattle, WA (February 2016) – Seattle-based sustainable residential developer, Dwell Development, was the recipient of two awards at the 2015 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Dwell Development’s Rainier Vista community won a Platinum Award for the Single-Family Community Under 100 units category and the builder’s Emerald Star home won the Silver Award for the Single-Family Specialty Green-Built Home category.

All 42 homes in the Rainier Vista community are designed and ready for zero energy living. Every home in the community is 5-Star Built Green certified – a voluntary certification program developed by the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties that establishes environmental standards for energy efficiency, water use and indoor air quality. Each home in the Columbia City community features solar-ready rooftop configurations, advanced framing, high impact insulation, triple-glazed windows, tankless on demand hot water, radiant heating systems or uber efficient ductless mini-splits, as well as heat recovery ventilation systems (HRV) to help prepare the home for net zero energy usage in the future.

The Emerald Star project was revolutionary in Seattle’s residential building industry. Dwell Development partnered with local firm, Caron Architects, to design the three-story home in Seattle’s vibrant Ballard neighborhood. The cutting-edge combination of green technology, renewables, and reclaimed materials help the 2,218 square-foot Emerald Star home achieve net zero energy usage, 70% reduction in water use, 90% reclaimed or FSC certified wood materials, and exceptional indoor air quality.

“The BALAs are the most prestigious awards of their kind, recognizing the very best in residential home design,” said Heather McCune, 2015 BALA subcommittee co-chair and director of marketing at the Southern California-based design firm Bassenian | Lagoni. “Those who become BALA recipients join an esteemed group of the most talented home building professionals, many of whom are continually driving our industry toward new heights of creativity and ingenuity.”
Now in its 32nd year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international, based on the principle that good design is not, and should not be, limited to high-priced and/or custom homes. Even the simplest, most affordable homes can receive an award if they showcase good design.
Award winners were announced during the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.
